Weight: 149 (in future I'll just have a number here)

Day 2, and a good way through it as well! So far so good, I've had diet soda, black coffee, and water. Tomorrow may be 'hump day' for many of us in more ways than one, but getting through it is better than repeating the same 2 days over and over (when you want to go longer)! Went to the store and picked up a couple sparkling waters as well, for fun, as well as a night time relaxation tea to encourage sleep. 

I'm surprised that my weight is 149 today, as I only just hit 150 yesterday. Hopefully that doesn't mean I'm dehydrated, as that could be a problem later on. Maybe I'll be on 149 for a couple days, though, so I should prepare myself for that. The "downside" of losing more weight this month is that it goes below the tracker in my bullet journal (stops at 149)! Haha, I only gave myself enough space to lose a few pounds; I didn't plan on fasting as often as I have when I was setting up the page.

No real temptations today. I saw my mum, but she didn't try to feed me anything (yay, no excuses needed) and we just drank some coffee together while we chatted. I thought I was being 'brave' today, having my coffee black, but it was one of the smoothest cups of coffee I've had. Apparently mum recently discovered she'd been putting too many grounds in the french press. Good timing.

Can't find my knitting needles. I'll probably buy some later tonight (when it's cooler out, no AC in car), just a cheap metal pair from Wally's will do me. My old ones were bent to heck anyway, and it's rough trying to straighten metal sticks.

So yeah, that was the water weight/food weight going bye-bye. I figure today and tomorrow I'll drop another 2-3 lbs going into ketosis, and then I'll start actually counting the weight loss as real fat loss once I am down to my previous fasted low-weight of 145 from last week. My September goal was to get to 140 by September 30th, and I'm not sure I'll get there, but I think I'll get pretty close.

Yesterday was a breeze. Day 1 is easy for me. Days 2-4 I am usually a bit hungry. I have learned to just shift my focus to "What can I drink?" instead of my typical "What can I eat?" I have a lot of different flavors of tea and bubbly waters at my office, so I just go to town on liquid, calorie-free flavors all day. Slept in a bit today, but I'll be going for a 1 mile run this evening, and doing body weight exercises (squats, jump squats, lunges, sit-ups, pushups). Feeling good about the next 8 days!

Last night, I had about 1/4 teaspoon of XCT oil when I took my multi-vitamin, because I realized that I may have been getting Vitamin K deficient from doing back-to-back extended fasts. I started bruising really easily, which is an early sign of K deficiency, since K is important for clotting. I always take a multi-vitamin when I fast, but I had (stupidly) forgotten that A, D, E, and K were probably not being absorbed much without any fat since they are fat soluble. So I had about 30 calories worth of fat with my vitamin, which might not be enough for max absorption, but should certainly make a big difference. I plan to repeat that each day that I fast. I don't think that 30 calories will have a negative impact on anything (autophagy, hunger, ketosis, weight loss, etc.). Curious if anyone else is taking a little oil with a multi-vitamin while fasting to increase absorption. If this was a stand-alone fast, I wouldn't bother, but I am basically always either in EF or IF mode, and plan to be until I finish losing weight.

My numbers at the start of day 5: 90.5, 102/79, 5.4. Numbers are quite encouraging. Well, maybe except I wish the weight would go down faster. BP in a good zone and glucose looks stabilized.

Water is starting to taste (AND SMELL) like pukey metal! 16 bottles so far today and a dash of black vinegar in the late afternoon. How do I get rid of this? Will I have to lay off the intense water regiment for a while? Vinegar was a desperate attempt to mask that awful taste but I don't think it's a good, sustainable practice. #water

The way I see it, the glucose-operating bits of the body are like a petrol-burning engine. Keto's different, it's a different fuel source, so it makes this car (my body) a hybrid of sorts. Ketones are a more abundant but slower burning fuel so maybe diesel-like. Getting keto adapted is like having the body produce diesel from my fat reserves. But that's only the first bit. The next part is to get the diesel engines fired up, and for them to start using ketones. (Yes, there's also gluoconeogenesis but that's another thing.) I'm at this second part now I think. Fasting lethargy is a grand old bitch that's making this super rough. #keto

Can I have my pizza now? Pepperoni and sausage, with extra pepperoni please?

Almost caved once or twice. First few days are the hardest, I know. I kept busy. Out the door at 6:30am and just got home at 10pm. Glad I'm not doing this alone.

End of fast goal: 145*

It begins! Very excited for this, first time fasting with a group. I hope we all reach the goals that we set for ourselves, whatever they may be! I plan to update each day mid or end of day, depending on what works out. 

Doing this fast primarily for weight loss, so I'm not going as hardcore as many who want to ensure autophagy or other healing benefits. I'm allowing 0 cal beverages (inc. herbal teas and diet drinks) as well as broth for if I feel woozy or unusually lethargic. My longest fast was a 14 day fast, quite some time ago. I'm more accustomed to short, 1-day/36 hour fasts. I think I will enjoy getting back into extended fasting.

It's been about 20 hours since I last ate, 15 since the group fast started, and there haven't been any 'challenging' moments yet, which is to be expected from such a short interval. I'm hoping to miss the rough days because I believe I am either in or close to ketosis already. I did about 72 hours of total, intentional fasting last week (although in my log it's only 2 calendar days, just because of how the hours worked out). When not fasted I was under 40g net carbs, and yesterday specifically I had only eggs and salt. So, ideally there won't be a huge crash after a couple days, just a minor decline during the full transition.

To take advantage of extra time not spent planning, preparing, and eating meals (easily 2 hours if you cook 2 meals a day at home), I'll be picking up some old hobbies that I haven't had as much time for during school. Mainly games, knitting, and crochet. I have a couple projects that could stand dusting off and finishing.

Of course, having more time to devote to work would also be a productivity bonus.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to is difficulty sleeping, hopefully it doesn't impact me too badly.

*this seems like a good number assuming I don't have a lot of carb/water weight to drop. 143 would be my 'stretch' goal, but I don't intend to exercise much during this time, so that's just a 'nice if it happens' number.

I am actually about 65 hours into an unlogged fast. The last one I wrote about went wonderful. I had a light day, then when I woke up the next day I felt ok to fast again, so here I am! I am hoping that helps my odds of completing the 10 day group fast instead of hurting it. 

Today I've had some black coffee, and a metric ton of water. I feel really good! 

This afternoon I start a new medication for my ADHD, so I'm a little nervous about that. My psychiatrist (who i found out is Islamic and fasts often himself for religious and spiritual reasons) advised to take it with a little coconut oil and a large glass of water, since it needs fat to work? He also advised me to take a magnesium and calcium supplement, even after fasting. I trust his advice, so I'm starting that today as well.

I took a before picture today. I can't wait to compare it on Oct 5th.


Day two! Here we go! 

I haven't experienced any weird symptoms or side effects, so I'm gonna keep on it. I woke up super thirsty this morning, which was strange because I drank almost 32 oz of water before bed. Mentally, I feel really clear headed. Very sharp. No brain fog at all.

I nearly had a moment of weakness last night while preparing dinner for the kids. I made them bacon and pancakes and it was so hard to resist. I portioned out the exact number of bacon strips for them, and made exactly two pancakes then got rid of the batter. It was close. I spent too much time gazing longingly at their plates while drinking lemon water, but I persevered. 

The thing that I'm enjoying the most is exercising self control. I've always been a compulsive and indulgent person. It's been really empowering to be able to hold strong. To face that bacon and not eat it, haha! Anyway, today should go pretty smoothly. I don't feel any hunger at all. I keep contemplating making some vegetable broth to have on hand. I have a ton of onion, fresh zucchini, squash and celery I don't want to go bad. 


Yesterday went really well. The vegetable broth I made was deeply satisfying, and I didn't feel any temptation to snack on the veggies. They went right out to the chickens. I slept better last night than I have in a very, very long time- even with waking up with the baby. It was like MAGIC. I did have an incidence of leg cramps during the night, so I think I'll pick up some potassium today just in case.

Otherwise I've been keeping busy by reading about fasting. It's helping keeping me on track for sure.


Feeling great! Still holding strong. I'm about 130 hours into my fast. My husband was released from his job and was able to come home early, so now I'm debating if I should break fast on Saturday to go out for our anniversary. I'm not sure. Maybe we will go to a movie instead of dinner?


Nothing really new to update. I still feel well. Slept great again last night. My husband is supportive. Confused but supportive. We had a very active day today walking around a park and I felt really good the whole time. I've noticed that I have really increased my water intake since I've started as well.

Day 1

Weight: 153.4 lbs

Good morning! Today is Day 1 of my 10 Day Fast (which is also going on as a Group Fast, so join us if you want to). I somehow gained back all of the weight from my 4-day fast last week, plus 1 lb, just from 3 days of normal eating. I was at 149.2 yesterday, so just from yesterday to today, I somehow gained 4 lbs on the scale. My stats from last week were:

Starting Weight (Sep. 19): 152.4 lbs

Ending Weight (Sep. 22): 145.6

I did have a lot of carbs and some alcohol Saturday and Sunday, so maybe that explains the re-gain, but still it always sucks when the number on the scale goes in the wrong direction. I already hit the gym this morning, and did 10 minutes of moderate intensity on the elliptical, and did some light weight lifting (legs day). I am going to do resistance training on most days during this fast to maintain muscle mass. I will also be taking the following supplements:

- multi vitamin

- magnesium

- potassium

- veggie broth (for sodium)

- biotin (not in my multi, and don't want to lose hair...)

Glycine (an animo acid, needed for collagen production--trying to promote skin elasticity)

- BCAAs after lifting weights for muscle repair

So yeah, that's a lot, but in my experience, this is what keeps me feeling good on an EF. I am also going to be trying to drink 100 ounces of liquid per day. Feeling happy to be fasting again, especially since this weekend was fun and I ate good food, but I feel like the more I lose weight, the more easily and more quickly I put it back on.

Fast Info:

-Type of fast: Water, broth, coffee, tea

-Purpose of fast: lose weight. Wedding is on 10.29.17. 

-Structure of fast: Fast M-F, 4x between 9.25.17 and 10.22.17, bonus week is 10.23.17-10.29.17. 

-Context: I have been fasting since February on and off. Started with my highest recorded weight of 172, and currently am down between 15-20 lbs from there. My wedding is right before Halloween and I would like to be able to continue fasting between now and then. After March, I had a lot of travel, moving, etc... so I had been pretty lax with the whole weight loss journey and have effectively been maintaining my weight since then. Time to buckle down again and get back to work for the next few months. I will have 20 days of fasts over the course of the next month, so I hope to lose about 10 lbs and get back into the 140's. As far as exercise is concerned, I usually ruck with 20-30% bodyweight for 5 or so miles at a 4 mph pace. This is usually 3x per week. 

Monday, Sept. 25, 2017 - 157.0 lbs

Started my fast last night. Haven't been doing as much Keto going in to this as I would normally like. Definitely had a lot of food over the weekend so I am retaining quite a bit of water weight. I want to get down to 145 by the end of this fast. I need to get to about 135 to be in a healthy range. 

The first day is usually the easiest for me, so I am kind of on autopilot as far as fasting is concerned. I have a ton of work and homework to stay busy with.

Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017 - 154.8 lbs (-2.2 lbs)

Ended up doing OMAD yesterday evening. My husband made me dinner as a surprise. It was delicious and very sweet of him, however, back on the bandwagon today and still down a fair bit of water weight from the weekend. I let him know I was fasting for the rest of the week, and that I'd be joining him for dinner on the weekend. 

Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 - 153.8 (-1.0 lbs)

Definitely half-assed yesterday's fast... Had the leftover garlic bread husband made Monday. Not hungry today. I am working on rebuilding my notebooks into a traveler's notebook setup, so that has kept me fairly preoccupied. Sucks that I am essentially on my third day one of this week, and have just done 3x 24 hr fasts in the past 3 days. 

I haven't been back in the 140s in a few years. I am anxiously waiting to be back in that weight range... I also haven't been keeping up with my rucking this week. It is raining out; lovely fall weather. However, it sucks for tromping around with 50 lbs on my back and doggo in tow. Ugh. I am just making excuses. I just need to shut up and do it....

Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017 - 152.7 (-1.1 lbs)

I am pretty pleased that even with my half-assed fasting I can still maintain a decent rate. Obviously this would level off if given a few more days, as the water weigh is lost... but for now, I am still pleased with the results of the fast thus far. Tuesday/Wednesday night I couldn't sleep. I kept tossing and turning all night long. It was awful. Last night I was finally able to get some rest, and I was dreading getting up at 5 this morning. 

Ah well.. time to start day 4. 

Here's to another day of fasting. and getting that much closer to goals.

My numbers at the start of day 4: 91, 124/77 (!!!), 5.4. Glucose numbers looking good but what's with that BP?!? Remnants of a bad dream? :P

Today was process group so the morning workout got sacrificed. Getting up at 3am for a border run is always fun. Still, good sesh today even though CSG was missing. I think that she's always had a big presence and when she's around the session tends to evolve around her contributions. Still, it did feel like something was missing. #PG

Sleep always gets messed up a bit on PG day. I can't doze in the cab, nor the bus, nor at the hospital so it's reading some shite on reddit or distracting myself with stupid Android games or staring out into space over some cold water. Hmm, actually I did get some shuteye in the waiting room so that helped. #zzz

I think that, for me, day 4 is sorta when it becomes real, the idea that I am actually, really, no kidding, on a fast. All kinds of coping mechanisms pop up. I drew out my islands of personality and populated the bits on fasting. Circles of support seem important, some folks to check in with to let them know I'm alive, some folks to brag about new achievements, some folks to chat about ideas on what's going on during fasting and stuff. #reality

On track for 14-15 bottles of water today. That might be close to my limit. It's enough to make me feel good the next day but there doesn't seem to be enough of me to process more water. #water #TMI

I'm ambivalent about Wonderful Wonderful.

I am Kelly. I am 29 years old as of this week.

I started fasting a little bit recently, back in August. First I did a few days of very low calorie - generally a drink from Starbucks (coffee with cream) and a few slices of American cheese, when I was still working at Domino's Pizza (very tough to fast there, let me tell you!). Then I managed to actually fast for a few days (but still drank Coke Zero). My longest has been 4 days. I loved the way I felt physically and the way I felt mentally by the 4th day. I probably only stopped because I got bored, and food is so entertaining.

Now I have almost completely lost myself again. This past week, or maybe even 2 weeks, I have been eating way too much again, to the point where I don't even recognize myself anymore. I haven't been so crazy with food in a long time, and I don't know how this has happened again.

I intend to do the 10 day fast with the group here, and then I am planning to do an extended fast with someone else starting mid-October.

I ate today, but have finished eating. I know tomorrow will be rough. Not necessarily at work, since I will be busy, but after work in particular. What does everyone else do with their time??
